Full Review of the Documentary "Crosses of Light"

In mid-May of 1988 KTTV-TV in Los Angeles, California, reported on a glowing 'cross of light' which had appeared in the window of a home just east of the city.? On May 27, the Pasadena Star-News reported the appearance of a second cross: "More than 3.5000 people saw the cross ... the police barricaded the street to prevent congestion from cars ... The lighted cross was the same as the first -- shining brightly from a bathroom window."

"When I first saw the golden light from the floating cross in the window, I had no idea how much it would change my life." As Bea Medina stood in awe looking at the cross, she felt "flooded with love" and was certain that it was a "sign from God that soon we will see the face of our Lord".? What she didn't know then was that she would be the first person to be healed by that cross -- the first of thousands of people who would report healing experiences and other 'miraculous' phenomena in the presence of crosses of light throughout the world.

The week before the cross was discovered in her daughter's bathroom window, Bea Medina's doctor had found on her mammogram a lump the size of a large plum, feared to be cancer in her left breast. A few days after seeing the cross, she went to consult with the surgeon, who told her. "How can I remove something that is no longer there? It is a miracle, it simply no longer exists."

Since then, reports of crosses have come from many parts of the world, including Canada, France, England, Japan, New Zealand and the Philippines.? In the United States there are now crosses in Louisiana, Texas, Washington, Oregon, New Jersey, Tennessee and several other cities in California. The initial responses of those in whose homes the crosses have appeared share some common elements: a sense of hope, a belief that it is a sign that a new time of peace is coming in which there will be no hunger or poverty, or that it is a sign of Christ's imminent return.

Hundreds of people claim that the presence of the crosses has lead to cures of severe medical and psychological problems. to an increase in creativity or to other 'miracles'. They have reported cures of cancer, blindness, alcoholism and drug addiction, lameness, epilepsy, migraine, heart disease and depression.? Some have even claimed healing when viewing pictures of the crosses, both video and snapshots.

Laura, a troubled teenager whose problems included attempted suicide, saw the third cross that appeared.? She stayed for several days and reported, "I feel like another person. It's another life for me. Before, I didn't want to help anyone. Now I want to help everyone. I believe in myself and I have hope."

Larry, an alcoholic and drug addict, arrived at one of the crosses saying, "If this is read, if this is a sign from God, then remove all my addictions." From that day on he never experienced any more craving. About a month later his wife woke him in the night to show him a huge cross 'burning' in the window.

The Knoxville Sentinial reports that 40 foot high crosses of light have appeared in a tiny church in Copper Ridge Tennessee. Pastor of this church, Reverend Joe Bullard reports that scores of people report miraculous healings there.

Dr. John Douglass, a Los Angeles physician who studied the medical documentation, said, "I was impressed with two of the healings that went on; the one who was an alcoholic and drug addict and also the teenager who settled down and seemed to have matured about four years in about one week."

The cross of light is made by a light source refracting through the type of glass commonly found in bathroom windows, forming a holographic image of an even-armed cross within a diamond. The image appears to be suspended in mid-air between glass and light. The light source is usually a light bulb, but it an also be a candle, street light or the moon.

Whether the image in the glass can be explained simply as a natural effect of light refraction is addressed in a documentary entitled "Crosses of Light", excerpts from which have been aired on PBS-TV. David Gonzales, a scientist consulted, stated that if it were a constant effect it could indeed be natural refraction. However, in each of the cases documented, the crosses had not previously existed.

Another story told in the "Crosses of Light" documentary is that of Sylvia and Jesus Piendo, who had built their own home and installed the double bathroom window glass themselves. At that time neither window had a cross shining from it. Their cross was the second to appear, but in only one of the panes. A Japanese television crew documenting the phenomenon considered this particularly significant.

A related phenomenon occurred during the taping of a program for "Hard Copy", an American television program. Dan Meenan reported that, while they were interviewing a priest at the site of an alleged cross appearance just outside New Orleans, Louisiana, no cross was actually visible. However, when they returned to the studio, the image of the cross could now bee seen on the tape."It was as clear as could be and had nothing to do with the image of the priest. It hadn't been there when we interviewed him. We went over it five times to be sure it was there, and it looked exactly the same to me each time."

? The phenomenon is happening not only to Christians.? Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and those of no religion have reported being deeply affected by the crosses.

Carole Farina used to work full time as a nutritionist, but always wished she could be an artist. After the appearance of two crosses in her windows, she had a sudden burst of inspiration and has begun to paint half-time, cutting back on her regular work hours. She says. "I don't believe in a Second Coming or anything, but I thing that these crosses are a sign of the change and transformation that the people of this earth need to start making by getting in touch with the light within themselves -- the energy, the power that they have to make the changes regarding things like world hunger and pollution."
